‘Real superheroes live in the hearts of small children fighting big battles’
The Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day returns to the Pearl Valley Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course at Val de Vie Estate on Thursday 7 November 2019. This golf day aids in raising funds for the Val de Vie Foundation, whose aim is to create a better life for all in the Drakenstein Valley. This year all funds raised will go towards one of Valcare’s members, the Good Hope Day Care Centre in Mbekweni, Paarl.
Xoliswa Mjezu operates the Good Hope Day Care Centre for disabled children from her home, currently accommodating 21 children and five caregivers, unable to take in any more of the long waiting list of other children with special needs. Funds raised from the 2019 Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day will enable the setting up of a purpose-built facility on the grounds of the Hope Through Action Community Sports Centre in Mbekweni.
This facility will accommodate up to 50 disabled children. The aim is for the modular structure to be fitted out with play areas, classrooms and an office space. A kitchen, ablution facility, parking and landscaping will also be constructed. The planned Good Hope Day Care Centre will comply with South African government regulations, allowing Xoliswa to apply for grants. To ensure sustainability and long-term impact, the project will be implemented in partnership with the Val de Vie Foundation’s social investment managers, Valcare, who will coordinate the process and run the monitoring and evaluation process.

Over the past three years, the Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day has made a considerable difference in the lives of children living in the Drakenstein Valley. The 2016 event raised sufficient funds for the construction of a roof over the quad at Orleansvale Primary. In 2017, a record amount of funds raised ensured that almost 700 preschool 3-5-year old children in Paarl East and Mbekweni’s under-resourced creches, nominated by Valcare in conjunction with the Val de Vie Foundation, were provided with a daily breakfast porridge for 10 months. In excess of R750 000 was raised at the 2018 event, allowing for the donation of Buccaneer school shoes and Visibility is Life reflective backpacks to 19 non-fee-paying primary schools in the Paarl vicinity.
The Vodacom Shop Celebrity Golf Day, an annual highlight on the Western Cape golfing calendar, promises to be another unforgettable golf day playing in the company of esteemed sportsmen and women, celebrities and business leaders.

The Val de Vie Foundation was founded in 2015 based on a strong focus of giving back to the larger community to help create a better life for all. The development company, Val de Vie Investments (Pty) Ltd, has committed 1% of all developer sales income to the Foundation. All of the new Home Owners’ Associations allocate 5% of levy income from new developments to the Foundation. In three years, more than R13 million has been allocated to the Val de Vie Foundation to support numerous viable community projects in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley. Through its social investment partner Valcare – who is responsible for the intervention, project identification, monitoring and evaluation – the Val de Vie Foundation supports close to forty organisations in the Valley.
