The South African social impact sector has long been characterised by passionate but often isolated efforts. However, a transformative shift toward “Collective Funding” is gaining momentum, with Nation Builder serving as a strategic catalyst. By uniting social investors and nonprofit organisations (NPOs) under a shared vision, Nation Builder is demonstrating that complex social challenges are best addressed through unified, multi-sector efforts rather than individual interventions.

A Legacy of Collaboration: The Valcare Roots and We are Durban Legacy

This movement toward collective funding and collective impact did not begin in a vacuum. Its foundations are rooted in a strong legacy of collaboration.

For more than 20 years, Valcare played a catalytic role in the Cape Winelands, nurturing networks, strengthening relationships, and fostering deep collaboration among nonprofits, funders, and community stakeholders. Valcare’s work demonstrated that social change is strengthened when organisations do not work in isolation but as part of a connected ecosystem.

In 2024, Valcare merged with Nation Builder, an organisation that had spent more than a decade contributing to thought leadership, knowledge sharing and sector development in South Africa’s social impact space. This union created a stronger platform for amplifying collective impact, affirming that the spirit of working together remains central to sustainable social change.

At the beginning of 2025, We Are Durban also joined forces with Nation Builder, bringing with it a valuable legacy of community-rooted partnership and regional ecosystem building in KwaZulu-Natal.

Together, these legacies continue to shape Nation Builder’s national approach: connecting nonprofits, social investors and partners in ways that strengthen the sector and support more coordinated responses to complex social challenges.

Modelling the 5 Pillars of Collective Impact

Nation Builder’s model is deeply aligned with the Collective Impact framework, which is widely recognised through research published by Stanford Social Innovation Review. The framework identifies five key conditions for collective impact: a common agenda, shared measurement, mutually reinforcing activities, continuous communication and backbone support.

Nation Builder brings these principles to life in practical ways across the South African social impact ecosystem.

A common agenda is formed when nonprofits and social investors are aligned around a shared vision for a thriving, resilient social sector. Through platforms such as Collabs, In Good Company Connect and strategic engagement opportunities, Nation Builder creates space for stakeholders to identify shared priorities and work towards coordinated solutions.

Shared measurement is strengthened through tools, guidelines and training that help organisations evidence their work with greater credibility. Resources such as the Impact Management and Reporting Guideline, along with related workshops and masterclasses, support nonprofits in moving beyond basic compliance towards more strategic impact measurement and reporting.

Mutually reinforcing activities are enabled through Nation Builder’s Membership Network and collaborative initiatives. Different stakeholders bring different strengths to the table — from frontline implementation and community knowledge to funding, governance, expertise and strategic support. When these efforts are intentionally coordinated, they contribute to a stronger whole.

Continuous communication is cultivated through regular connection points such as Midday Mingles, Member Buzz, site visits, working groups, online platforms and network engagement. These spaces help build trust, surface shared challenges and keep organisations and partners connected to one another.

Finally, backbone support is provided through Nation Builder’s role as a catalyst, connector and custodian of collaboration. By offering coordination, training, tools, practical resources and organisational development support, Nation Builder helps maintain momentum and strengthen the conditions needed for collective impact to take root.

Collective Funding in Action

By leveraging these pillars, Nation Builder enables a Collective Funding environment. Instead of social investors working in silos, they are integrated into a network of “vetted” and professionally supported NPOs. This reduces risk for investors and ensures that funding is directed toward organisations that demonstrate high standards of governance and measurable impact.

Through initiatives like the Introduction to Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning workshops and Organisational Development Pathways (ODP), Nation Builder equips NPOs to handle funding with excellence, while simultaneously providing investors with the frameworks needed to see their contributions as part of a larger, systemic solution.

The journey from Valcare’s early networks to Nation Builder’s current national influence is a testament to the power of collective action. By modeling the Stanford-defined pillars of impact, Nation Builder isn’t just facilitating funding; it is building a movement that ensures collaboration fuels a brighter, more sustainable future for South Africa.
