Nation Builder’s Social Investment Manager, Toni Grobbler, attended the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation’s Hub Summit in Stellenbosch in May—a timely and practical gathering focused on the current realities, pressures and opportunities facing South Africa’s nonprofit sector.
The Summit brought together changemakers, leaders, organisations and communities committed to creating lasting social impact. It also created valuable space for collaboration, connection and honest reflection on what organisations need in order to remain effective, credible and sustainable in a changing environment.
A key theme that emerged was the need to hold purpose and discipline together. Aasiyah Adams offered valuable insight into what it takes to lead an organisation with both heart and operational rigour, highlighting the importance of building sustainable income streams and approaching nonprofit leadership with the same level of strategic and financial discipline expected in any well-run organisation.
The conversation reflected the increasing demand placed on nonprofits as communities navigate complex challenges such as youth unemployment, education gaps and service backlogs. In this context, Sheri Errington emphasised that ethical governance is not optional—it is foundational to long-term sustainability. Strong boards, clear role separation, transparent financial controls and sound reporting practices all help build trust with beneficiaries, funders, partners and regulators.
The Summit highlighted the work of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation Incubation Hub, primarily in partnership with Mercedes-Benz South Africa. This intensive capacity-building programme equips nonprofits using sport for social development with practical skills, governance frameworks and mentorship to strengthen fund readiness and organisational sustainability.
For Nation Builder, these conversations strongly align with our ongoing work of supporting organisations on their Organisational Development Pathway. Compassionate purpose remains essential—but when paired with disciplined management, ethical governance and credible reporting, nonprofits are better positioned to attract sustainable funding, strengthen partnerships and deliver measurable, lasting impact.
