When executed correctly, project management enables leaders to complete every objective on time and within budget. This ensures that every aspect of business runs more efficiently and effectively.
On Friday, 19 May 2023, Valcare hosted a training on Organisational Operations for non-profit organisations at the Paarl Historium.
Nicole Kisten, Valcare’s training and development manager, facilitated the training and focused on equipping non-profit leaders with practical knowledge of effective and efficient project management.
According to Kisten, the recurring theme in the training was purpose. “When the purpose of a project is clearly shared with everyone in the team, it becomes the driving force behind a project’s success.”
Follow these five steps to ensure your project management is effective and efficient.
Prioritise the process
According to the Project Management Institute, organisations that do not prioritise project management have a 50% chance of running into critical failures down the line. Set aside sufficient time to properly plan and manage your project.
Select the right people for the right roles
Project success requires a team mindset. There is no “I” in project success. Ensure you select the right people in the right roles, doing the right things at the right time.
Communicate with your team
Having open communication within your team boosts the success of your project. It builds trust, secures the team’s buy-in, unlocks skills, resources and ideas, creates a sense of belonging, and ultimately results in more efficient work.
Follow the five phases of project management
Successful project completion relies on the five phases of project management. By understanding and implementing each phase, your team will be on the same page with clear expectations and goals.
- The five phases of project management are
- Project Initiation
- Project Planning
- Project Execution
- Monitoring and Controlling
- Project Closure
Learn from the evaluation of past projects
Evaluate the outcome of past projects. This will provide insight into lessons learned and assist in the decision-making process of future projects.
“I believe I can take the learnings from this training session back to my team and the organisation for ongoing growth. The knowledge I gained will help bring loose details together,” Brent Du Toit, camp director at Bridges Retreat Centre, shared.
